A requirement of any gasket is the ability to recover under variable loads. The effects of pressure and temperature fluctuations, the temperature difference across the flange face, together with flange rotation, bolt stress relaxation and creep, demand a gasket with adequate flexibility and recovery to maintain a seal under variable and uneven loading. The spiral wound gasket meets these requirements. Description: Spiral-wound gaskets are made of a preformed metallic v-shaped strip and a soft Non-Metallic material wound together under pressure, with an inner and outer guide ring. CONSTRUCTION: The winding is manufactured in the form of a spiral with filler material between the windings. The filler materials fill the irregularities of the flanges. The external guide ring has the function of centering the gasket in the flanges and gives the sealing elements additional resistance against line pressure and excessive bolt torque.
Spiral Wound Gasket Basic Type (Type R)
Basic construction type , Inner and outer diameters are reinforced with several plies of metal, without filler, to give greater stability and sealing.
Typical Application
Suitable for applications including valves, valve bonnet, vessels and pumps in tongue and groove, male and female or grooved to flat face flange assemblies.
Spiral Wound Gasket with inner ring (Type IR)
Style R with a solid metal inner ring, designed for flanges without a compression stop. To prevent accumulation of solids, reduce turbulent flow of process fluids and minimize erosion, damages of gasket between flange bore and the inside diameter, the annular space is filled up by solid inner metal ring.
Typical Application Suitable for male and female pipe flanges.
Spiral Wound Gasket with Outer ring (Type CR)
Solid outer ring accurately Centers the gasket on the flange face to gives the additional radial strength to prevent heat and corrosion barrier protecting gasket windings and preventing flange erosion. In case of installing the outer ring, it is very easy to install the gasket to flange face because the end of outer ring will touch at bolts.
Typical Application This gasket is suitable for use with flat face and raised face flanges up to and inclusive of class 2500. Above class 600 an internal ring is recommended.
Spiral Wound Gasket With inner and Outer Ring (Type CRIR)
This gasket is a Style CR gasket with an internal ring for an additional compression limiting stop. It will prevent the corrosions on flange face at annular space. For use with flat face and raised face flanges, this gasket features increased compressive force for blow-out prevention.
Typical Application Suitable for use with flat face and raised face flanges and specified for high pressure / temperature service - Class 900 and above or where corrosive or toxic media are present.
